SILVA Enters into the Global Biodata Coallition

🎉 Congratulations to SILVA on a Major Achievement!

🌟 The Global Biodata Coalition recently announced the inclusion of SILVA into its prestigious Global Core Biodata Resources (GCBRs) list, which now includes 52 top-tier data resources in life sciences and biomedical research globally.

🤝 The SILVA team celebrates this accomplishment as an award for the culmination of extensive collaborative efforts, dedication and hard work of many individuals and organizations involved.

GLOBAL BIODATA COALLITION

The main goal of the Global Biodata Coalition (GBC) is to ensure the sus-tainability and open access of those bio-data resources considered as critical for biomedical and life sciences research. The GBC focuses on coordinating the funding of global core biodata resources (GCBRs) and providing a discussion forum for data resource managers. This effort aims to address the challenges of fragmented, duplicative, and fragile biodata infrastruc-ture and to support the open access data policies required by most funders, bene-fiting scientists, national infrastructures, and the commercial sector.

SILVA BECOMES A GCBR RESOURCE

On December 11, 2023, the Global Biodata Coallition announced the inclusion of 15 new biodata resources, including SILVA, into its Global Core Biodata Resources (GCBRs) list. The assessment process for GCBRs was undertaken by a panel of more than 50 independent expert reviewers against a series of criteria that included scientific focus, the size and reach of the user communities, quality of service, governance, and impact on global research.

The recognition of SILVA as a GCBR marks a significant milestone. This affiliation not only enhances SILVA's visibility, accessibility and long-term maintenance, but also underscores its critical role in providing researchers worldwide with reliable, high-quality biological data, integral for groundbreaking scientific discoveries. The SILVA team celebrates this accomplishment as an “award” for the culmination of extensive collaborative efforts, dedication and hard work of many individuals and organizations involved.

As a member of this elite group of data resources (52 GCBRs included so far), SILVA stands alongside other top-tier databases, essential for advancing life sciences and biomedical research globally. UNIPROT, Gene Ontology, DNA Data Bank of Japan, or Catalogue of Life are some of the other GCBR resources. The full list is terrific! check it out here.

SILVA PROJECT

SILVA provides comprehensive, quality checked and regularly updated datasets of aligned small (16S/18S, SSU) and large subunit (23S/28S, LSU) ribosomal RNA (rRNA) sequences for all three domains of life (Bacteria, Archaea and Eukarya). SEE PROJECT WEBSITE.
